What is Art Therapy?

Art therapists use the process of self-expression, and the resulting artwork to help clients understand their emotional conflicts, develop social skills, improve self-esteem, manage addictions, reduce anxiety, and restore normal function to their lives.

A typical Art Therapy session involves the client talking about whatever concerns them and creating art under the guidance of the Art Therapist. Talking about the artwork and the experience of making it helps the client get insight into their situation. The artwork is said to be a ‘container’. It contains meaning that can be explored. No artistic ability is required – it is really about working with materials instead of words. The art is a unique expression and being able to tell our unique story may be difficult with words. The art needs no explanation. It is an expression of what is.
